MD Student · Researcher · Patient Advocate
Hi. I'm Afraa. This is where I keep track of everything I've done outside of lectures and exams: the awareness days I've shown up for, a clinic placement that actually changed how I think, and the research I got to be part of.
// The Person
Hi, I'm Afraa.
I'm a fourth-year MD student at Gulf Medical University, Ajman. This is where I keep track of everything I've done outside of lectures and exams: the awareness days I've shown up for, a clinic placement that actually changed how I think, and the research I got to be part of. It's a running log more than a finished portfolio, so it'll keep growing as I do.

// What Drives Me
Patient care starts before diagnosis.
I believe the doctor I'm becoming is being shaped long before graduation. Every community health event, every research session, every clinical hour is part of a larger commitment: to understand people, not just their symptoms. Medicine, to me, is as much about listening as it is about knowing.
// The Work
Evidence takes more than a textbook.
The research side came early. Afraa Asfaque co-presented an original poster at GMU Research Day in May 2026, examining the gut-diet-mind relationship among adults in the UAE. Around the same time, she completed the NIDA Clinical Trials Network's Good Clinical Practice course, six hours on research ethics, informed consent, and how clinical trials are actually run. None of it was required. It happened because understanding how evidence is built changes how you use it at the bedside. That connection, from Ajman clinic rooms to academic posters, is the one she keeps coming back to: the work only means something if it eventually reaches a patient.
